Short answer: often, yes. But the odds are decided in the first hour, and most of what people do in that hour makes things worse.
So before anything else if your iPhone is wet right now, read the next section and come back for the rest afterwards. The explanations can wait. Your phone can’t.
Power the phone off and leave it off. Do not plug it in, do not charge it, do not press buttons to "check if it still works". Electricity plus liquid is what actually kills these devices not the water itself.
This is the part that matters most, so it goes first.
When someone walks in with a wet iPhone, these are the five things we ask about, roughly in order of how much they matter.
An iPhone that was off or asleep has a much better chance than one that was mid-video-call. Liquid across an energised board causes immediate short circuits. Liquid across a dormant one mostly just sits there until it’s cleaned off.
This one surprises people. Fresh water is the mild case. Everything else is worse, and some are dramatically worse.
Tap or rain water
Best case. Some minerals, generally cleanable.
Pool water
Chlorine is corrosive. Worse than it looks.
Coffee, soda, juice
Sugar conducts and stays sticky. Bridges circuits long after it dries.
Salt water
The worst. Highly conductive and aggressively corrosive from the first minute.
Toilet or sink water
Depends what else was in it. Usually treated as contaminated
Salt water is the one to take seriously. If your phone went into the ocean, the clock is running much faster than it would be otherwise, and getting it professionally cleaned the same day genuinely changes the outcome
Seconds is good. Minutes is workable. "I finished the call first" is a problem.
Corrosion begins as soon as liquid meets the board and it does not stop when the surface looks dry. A phone brought in the same day is a very different job from one that sat in a drawer for two weeks while its owner hoped for the best.
A splash that reached the charging port is a small job. A phone that was fully submerged for a minute is a full teardown. We can usually tell which we’re dealing with once it’s open.
Fresh water, powered off fast, in our hands within a day those phones usually come back. Salt water, or charged while wet, or left for weeks those are the ones where we sometimes have to have a difficult conversation. Everything in between is genuinely case by case, which is why nobody can give you a percentage over the phone.
Every iPhone since the 7 carries a water resistance rating, and newer models are rated for real depth. So why are we still fixing them?
Those tests use still, fresh water at a controlled temperature and pressure, on a brand new device. A swimming pool has chlorine. The ocean has salt. A hot shower has steam, which passes through seals that stop liquid water. None of that resembles the test.
The adhesive gaskets around the screen and back degrade with heat, time and every knock the phone takes. A three-year-old iPhone does not have the water resistance it left the factory with, and nothing about it will tell you that until it matters.
Screen or battery replacements break the original seal. Good technicians re-seal properly, but the factory-fresh rating is a one-time thing. Worth knowing rather than worrying about.
Damaged front or rear glass ends water resistance entirely, even when the crack looks trivial. It’s one of the strongest arguments for not ignoring rear damage we went into that trade-off in our guide to cracked iPhone back glass.
It comes up every single time, so let’s deal with it properly.
Rice does not pull moisture out of a sealed phone. It absorbs ambient humidity from the air in the container, slowly, and it has no mechanism for reaching liquid sitting under a shield on a logic board. What it does do is shed starch dust and small fragments into your charging port and speaker grilles.
The reason the myth persists is that some phones survive the rice treatment. They survive because they were switched off and left alone for two days which is genuinely useful not because of the rice. The rice is along for the ride.
Silica gel packets are somewhat better at controlling humidity, but they share the same core limitation: nothing sitting outside the phone can remove residue from inside it. Only opening it up can do that.
This is where the difference between drying a phone out and actually repairing it becomes clear.
The phone comes apart completely and the battery is disconnected first, before anything else, so nothing on the board is live while we work.
Water leaves tracks. Mineral deposits, discolouration, green or white crust around connectors. Under magnification we can see where the liquid travelled and which components sat in it.
The board goes into an ultrasonic bath with isopropyl alcohol. High-frequency vibration lifts residue out from under shields and from between component legs places no amount of drying, wiping or rice will ever reach. This step is the actual treatment for water damage, and it’s what separates a real repair from a hopeful one.
Corroded components get replaced individually. Damaged connectors, a shorted power rail, a failed audio or charging chip. Cameras, both speakers, microphones, Face ID, wireless charging, every antenna. Water damage often takes out one small thing that only shows up if somebody checks for it specifically.

This is the pattern that catches people out more than any other, and it’s worth understanding even if your phone seems fine right now.
An iPhone gets wet. It dries out. It powers on and everything works. Relief all round, nobody takes it anywhere, life moves on.
Then, somewhere between a week and three months later, it starts misbehaving. The corrosion never stopped it just needed time to eat through enough of a trace or a connector to cause a fault. Watch for:
If your phone has any history of liquid exposure and one of these appears, the two are almost certainly connected. Getting it cleaned at that stage is still worth doing far more so than waiting to see whether it gets worse, because it will.
Sometimes the damage is too far gone. Salt water left for a fortnight, or a board where the corrosion has eaten through under a chip there’s a point past which a phone is not coming back, and we’d rather tell you that than take your money for a repair that won’t hold.
That is not the end of the conversation though, because the phone is usually not what you actually care about. In a lot of cases a board can be revived just long enough to pull the data off, even when it will never work reliably again. Two things make a real difference to how that goes. Don’t keep attempting to power the phone on, because each try risks the exact components we need working. And bring it in sooner rather than later, for the same reason as everything else on this page.

A fair question, and the answer depends on more than the repair quote.
One point that catches people out: liquid damage is not covered by the standard Apple warranty, and iPhones carry internal indicators visible in the SIM tray slot that turn red on contact with liquid. Apple’s usual route for these is whole-device replacement at out-of-warranty pricing rather than a board repair, which is a large part of why independent board-level work exists at all. There is no hard cutoff, but the curve drops off quickly. Same day is ideal. Within a week is still very workable for fresh water. Beyond a few weeks, especially with salt or sugary liquids, corrosion has usually done permanent damage. That said, we have brought back phones that sat in drawers for months, so it is worth asking rather than assuming.
Most water-damaged iPhones we see are repairable. The ones that aren’t usually got there through the same few steps: charged while wet, powered on repeatedly, or left for weeks in the hope it would sort itself out.
