A phone that won’t switch on doesn’t always have a dead battery. Sometimes the battery tests fine, the screen is fine, the charging port has just been replaced, and the thing still sits there doing nothing.
That is usually the moment a repair shop either hands it back with a shrug or starts using the phrase micro soldering. If you have never come across the term, here is what it means in plain English, and how to tell whether your device genuinely needs it.
Micro soldering is the repair of individual components on a device’s logic board, carried out under a microscope using temperature-controlled tools. Instead of swapping a whole module such as a screen or a battery, the technician removes and replaces the tiny chips, resistors, capacitors and solder pads that sit on the board itself.
The scale is what makes it difficult. Solder joints on a modern phone board are finer than a grain of table salt. The board is not a flat sheet either; it is layered, with connections running between floors like wiring inside a building. A technician doing this work is moving a soldering tip a few tenths of a millimetre at a time while watching through a microscope at 10x to 40x magnification.
That is the reason most repair shops don’t offer it. Fitting a screen is careful assembly work. Rebuilding a charging circuit is something closer to surgery, and the equipment alone runs into thousands of dollars before anyone has learned to use it.

The difference matters more than it sounds. A shop that only does module swaps diagnoses by substitution: try a different port, try a different screen, try a different battery. When none of that works, the verdict is “not repairable”. A board-level bench starts from measurement instead, so it can tell you which component failed rather than which ones didn’t.
That current-draw reading tells an experienced technician a surprising amount on its own. A board pulling nothing at all points somewhere very different from a board pulling half an amp and warming up in your hand.
A phone needs micro soldering when the fault sits on the logic board rather than in a replaceable part. In practice that means after liquid damage, after a hard drop, or when a brand-new replacement part fails to cure the original symptom.
These are the situations that come across the bench most often.
No screen, no vibration, no charging indicator, on a charger and cable you know are good. If the battery and display both test fine in another device, the cause is on the board: a failed power management chip, a shorted capacitor pulling the rail down, or a cracked joint underneath the processor after a drop.
This is the single most common reason people end up needing board work. The port was worn, the port got replaced, and nothing changed. The fault was further up the line all along, usually the charging IC (Tristar or Tigris on iPhones) or a blown filter on the charging rail. Corrosion is slow. A phone can take a splash, dry out, behave normally for six weeks, then start dropping calls or refusing to charge as the copper underneath quietly eats away. Rice does nothing for this, and neither does time. What helps is opening the board, cleaning the corrosion properly and repairing what has already been lost. The same rule applies to laptops, which is worth knowing if you have ever spilled something on a MacBook.
Tilt the phone under a bright lamp. If you can just make out icons in the dark, the display itself is alive and the backlight circuit has failed: usually a blown backlight filter, a damaged coil, or the driver section of the display IC. A new screen won’t fix it, and plenty of people buy one before finding that out.
A screen that taps things by itself, or has a dead strip across the middle, often points at the touch IC rather than the glass. If the symptom survives a fresh display, the chip is the suspect.
Audio ICs sit close to the edge of the board and take the impact when a phone lands on a corner. Cracked joints there produce exactly this pattern: everything else works, but callers can’t hear you.
If the device restores cleanly and still loops, or hangs on the logo, the problem is hardware. A failing storage chip and an unstable power rail both produce loops, and telling them apart needs measurement rather than guesswork.
When a phone stops recognising its own storage after a drop or a spill, the NAND or its supporting circuitry is usually involved. This is the point where board repair and recovering data from a phone that won’t turn on become the same job.

This is worth saying out loud because “micro soldering” can be used as an upsell. A trustworthy shop will run the cheap checks first, tell you when the fix is a twenty-minute part swap, and only reach for the microscope when the evidence points at the board. Your data lives on a storage chip soldered directly to the logic board, and modern encryption ties that chip to other components on the same board. You cannot simply move the storage into a working phone and read it. What a technician can do is repair the board well enough to bring it up for long enough to pull everything off, which is why a “water damaged, total loss” verdict from one shop isn’t always the end of the story.
For a device that is otherwise in good shape, repairing one failed component almost always costs a fraction of replacing the whole thing. A single chip failure doesn’t make the other hundred parts worthless.

It makes less sense when the board has been through a severe spill that has spread under multiple chips, when a previous repair attempt has torn away pads across the board, or when the device was already on its last legs. A proper diagnostic gives you that answer before you commit to anything.
Most board-level repairs are finished within one to three business days. Diagnosis comes first and can take an hour or more on its own, because finding the fault is genuinely most of the work. Straightforward jobs such as a backlight filter or a charging IC are often done the same day. Liquid damage takes longer, since the board needs cleaning, drying and retesting between stages, and problems have a habit of appearing in sequence rather than all at once.
You can learn it, but not on a phone you need working tomorrow. Heat is what catches people out. Too little and the joint never flows properly; too much and the chip next door lifts, the board delaminates, or the pads underneath come away with the component. “Reflowing” a board with a heat gun, a trick that circulates widely online, can produce a phone that works for a fortnight and then fails permanently in a way nobody can repair.
If the craft appeals to you, buy scrap boards and practise on those. If the phone in your hand holds your photos, that isn’t the board to learn on.
