Water by itself is not really what kills a MacBook. Pure distilled water is a poor conductor. The problem is what is dissolved in the liquid. Minerals, sugars, salts, milk solids, citric acid from juice. Those leftovers sit on the logic board and start eating the copper traces and the tiny surface-mount components sitting on top of them.
Corrosion is an electrochemical reaction, and electricity feeds it. That is the part most people miss. As long as the battery is connected and pushing voltage through a wet board, the damage keeps spreading even while the machine is sitting closed on your desk. Kill the power and you slow the reaction down dramatically.
This is also why a MacBook can seem completely fine after a spill and then die four days later. The spill did not fail the machine. The four days of quiet corrosion did.
Do not go through the Apple menu. Hold the power button until the screen goes black, usually about ten seconds. Every second the board stays powered is another second of active corrosion. Yes, you will lose whatever you had unsaved. That is a much smaller loss than a logic board.
MagSafe or USB-C charger, external drives, hubs, SD cards, headphones, monitors. All of it. A powered dock can backfeed voltage into the board, and liquid inside a port turns a charging cable into a short circuit waiting to happen.
Microfiber cloth or paper towel. Blot, do not scrub. Get the standing liquid off the keyboard, the trackpad, the edges of the display, and around the ports. You are only handling what is on the surface here. Whatever went inside is beyond the reach of a paper towel.
Open the lid to roughly 90 degrees and stand the MacBook on a towel like an upside-down V, keyboard facing down. Gravity is genuinely useful at this stage. It pulls liquid back out the way it came in instead of letting it settle deeper onto the board. Leave it in a room with normal airflow. Not a hot car, not on a radiator, not in direct Texas sun.
No pressing keys. No opening and closing the lid to see if it wakes. No plugging in the charger to check the battery light. Just leave it. Then get it booked in for a proper look. Surface drying does nothing about the residue already sitting on the board, which is the part that actually causes failure later.

No, and anyone promising otherwise is selling you something. Roughly speaking, three things decide the outcome: what the liquid was, how long the machine stayed powered, and how quickly it reached a bench.
Clean water caught in the first hour is often a straightforward clean and test. Coffee with sugar, soda, juice, wine, or salt water is a harder job because the residue is acidic and aggressive. A machine that sat powered on for two weeks after a spill has usually suffered damage that has spread well past the original splash zone.

On any MacBook from 2018 onward, the storage is soldered directly to the logic board and encrypted by the T2 or Apple Silicon security chip.
